What is Faux?

Faux finishing, just what is it exactly? Derived from the French word "faux", meaning false, these finishes simulate many materials and surfaces that have been used in the construction of simple homes, to the colossal palaces and amphitheaters of times past. Faux finishes have been used for thousands of years when the original material was not available, too expensive, or its use was technically unfeasible. For example many early 18th century plantation houses had wood fireplace mantels that were marbled or "fauxed" to resemble the high grade marble fireplaces of Europe.
